Course Period

The Surgery Course Week will be held from 18th January to 22rd January 2027.

Surgery

This course is designed to develop core surgical skills at the beginning of surgical training by teaching correct basic techniques. Participants will learn instrument handling, knot tying, suturing techniques, fine tissue handling, wound management, and diathermy.

The course is delivered by experienced surgeons with extensive knowledge and expertise in surgical education. These courses are conducted both in the UK and internationally.

Health professionals, MBBS students, and MS students interested in developing their surgical skills.

Course Description

Medical students planning to pursue a career in surgery are expected to develop a range of basic surgical skills before commencing specialty surgical training.

Participants will be introduced to the fundamental principles behind various surgical techniques and will practise these skills through individual tuition under the expert supervision of consultant surgeons. Participants will be assessed throughout the course and awarded a certificate upon successful completion.

The course is particularly beneficial for students interested in General Surgery, Orthopaedics, or Accident and Emergency Medicine.

Teaching will also cover the fundamental principles of plaster application and techniques to prevent complications associated with non-operative fracture management using plaster immobilisation.

Experienced orthopaedic clinicians and plaster technicians will provide practical guidance. The teaching approach emphasises the relationship between sound anatomical knowledge and safe surgical practice, including the identification of key anatomical structures and their significance in surgical pathology, investigation, and treatment.
